Unity in diversity in Kabuliwala by Rabindranath Tagore
Unity in diversity means unity among those people who are different, culturally, socially and religiously. People living in India are from various religions, casts and beliefs, however they are living in unity and providing the fact that unity in diversity.
In short story Kabuliwala Tagore presents the characters who are from different culture, religion and country. Tagore attempts to depict the concept of unity in diversity. Narrator's daughter Mini says to him " Dad our sentry Ramdayal doesn't even know how to pronounce the word crow. He is so backward." His father says, "before I could enlighten her on the differences between languages" It shows though Mini is just a child, she curbs the unity in diversity. Mini's parents are worried about the ''tall shabbily clothed Afghan " because he is not from their country and religion. They aren't accepting the concept of unity in diversity. Later her mom says to her "Why have you accepted this from him?" As the story moves ahead, writer moulds it towards the concept of unity in diversity. Firstly Mini accepts Rahmat, Kabuliwala , as her father says" I saw her sitting on the bench next to the door speaking non stop to him." Later Mini's father also feels for him when he comes to know about the circumstances he has gone through. It no longer mattered to me that he he was an ordinary fruit peddler from Afghanistan and I was from an aristocratic Bengali family. "He was the father and so was the I" He gives him money to visit his hometown in Kabul. He tries to show that India accepts all the cultures, races and religious beliefs without any discrimination. That's what Tagore intends to show when. he says it's not the spirit of India to reject anything, reject any race reject any culture,It comprehends all. It clearly shows the concept of unity in diversity.
